TRYOUTS
TRYOUT DATES FOR 2025-2026 SWIM SEASON
Tryouts for the 2025-2026 season will take place on May 12, May 14, and May 16 at the Austin Swim Club pool on Southwest Parkway (the same place where we have practices). You only need to pick ONE of those dates. You do not need to come to all three. You will need to arrive by 7am with a swimsuit, goggles, a swim cap (if you wear one), and a towel. The tryout will be over by 8am, so will have time to get ready for school at the pool or drive home and get ready at home if you want.
We typically try to carry a roster of around 40-50 athletes, with a close to 50/50 split of guys and girls. That usually works out to around 10-13 kids for each grade level. The reason for this size is because of travel space on buses, workout space in the water, and the number of slots available for athletes in a UIL swim meet (4 athletes/event and 1 relay/event at championship meets). If we get larger than 50, our workout lanes become overcrowded, it becomes difficult to get everyone into the meets, and we end up leaving a lot of kids behind when we compete.
Our tryouts involve the following:
10 x 100 freestyles on 2:00 interval, holding best average they can
(5-10 minutes of rest)
1 x 200 Individual Medley (focusing on technique more than speed)
(5-10 minutes of rest)
1 x 50 freestyle at full speed
If you do not know what any of that means, have no competitive swimming background, and are not familiar with all four competitive strokes, we would recommend you email Coach Goodwyn so we can arrange a time to talk on the phone. We are often very competitive for space, and a swimmer with no previous experience whatsoever may have a hard time making the team. Please know that this is our least favorite part of the job. We wish we had the pool and bus space so that everyone who wants to join the team could do so, but it’s just not feasible.
